dna yarn swab

It doesn't look like much: Yarn tied together with string that is wrapped around a stick.

imageBut this contraption could be New York City's first ever patented invention, according to Alexander Holz at New York World.

The forensic swab was invented in 2003 when the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the need for a device that could pick up single cells of DNA. Most of the products on the market used cotton balls, which were accurate only for large DNA samples.

Forensic biologist Theresa Caragine led a team to design an new device that looks more MacGyver than CSI. What makes it so effective is high quality cotton yarn.

“We would use any swab that is the best swab out there,” Caragine told New York World. “Compared to the other commercial swabs we’ve tested to date, our swab is still superior.”
